The 31st Concord Area CROP Walk will be held on October 16th, 2011, with music and registration starting at 1:30 PM and walk start at 2:15 PM. The CROP Walk follows a scenic 7 KM route, going over the North Bridge and later up the scenic Nashawtuc Hill area in residential Concord. The Walk starts and finishes at First Parish in Concord on Lexington Road.
CROP Hunger Walks are "Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty"-- neighbors walking together to take a stand against hunger in our world. The CROP Walk raises funds to support the ecumenical mission work of Church World Service in (1) worldwide emergency relief of disasters, such as floods, hurricanes, and earthquakes; (2) for refugee aid; and (3) for fighting the root causes of hunger through community development programs in 80 underdeveloped countries. In addition, one quarter of the funds from the CROP Walk will provide substantial contributions to the seven local hunger relief programs we support:
The Acton Community Supper and Food Pantry provides 3 days of groceries and items from their Clothes Closet to 200 families each week in Acton and its surrounding towns.
The Bedford Community Table/ Pantry serves a hot dinner to 70-85 people each Thursday, September though May. They also offer a food pantry every Thursday for individuals or families who can prove need.
The Open Table Concord provides a hot nutritious supper and groceries every Thursday to 200-250 individuals, serving all who come.
The Open Table Maynard provides a hot nutritious supper and groceries to over 100 individuals every Monday, serving all who come.
The Maynard Food Pantry provides free groceries to 40-45 families each week. Maynard residents shop twice per month and residents from surrounding towns may shop once per month.
The Sudbury Community Food Pantry provides 60-70 families with free groceries Tuesdays & Thursdays. The Food Pantry is open to all in need, without a needs test.
Now in its 17th season, Gaining Ground grows organic produce for hunger relief with help from hundreds of volunteers, who work and learn in our garden.
Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry, Inc. services the communities of Ayer, Devens, Groton, Harvard, Littleton, and Shirley. Families may receive free groceries twice per month.
The Townsend Ecumenical Outreach (TEO) provides free groceries to 186 individuals on the third Saturday of every month and a larger distribution during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
The CROP Walk is a fun event where friends and family can live out their faith, helping neighbors in need here and abroad.
- The Concord Carlisle HS Pep Band, 70+ strong, will play envigorating music before the Walk, from 1:30 PM to 2:00 PM.
- The Yankee Stompers Dixieland Jazz Band will entertain us during refreshments in the parish hall after the Walk.
- Many Sunday school or youth groups make colorful hunger theme banners in class and then take part in a banner contest before the start of the Walk. The winning banners get a pizza award dinner.
- All walkers with 20 sponsors or more win a free CROP Walk T shirt with youth art design. Moreover youth draw hunger art in the parish hall after the walk.
